Nurse Laura Harris used crowdfunding to pay for cancer drug


An oncology nurse with stage 4 bowel cancer who resorted to crowdfunding to pay for a drug not available on the NHS says the treatment is working.

Laura Harris, 43, was told in January that she had three months to live. A drug called bevacizumab could extend her life but each treatment block costs £21,000 and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has ruled that the benefits do not justify the costs.

Ms Harris, who has two children and a stepson and lives in Barnstaple, Devon, set up a page on Gofundme last year. Within days, thousands of strangers had donated a total of £90,000 — enough for four blocks of the treatment. She has now completed her first cycle of bevacizumab alongside another…
