Tiotropium is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as long/acting anticholinergic bronchodilators. It is commonly used to manage symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and, in some cases, asthma. Tiotropium works by blocking the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that causes constriction of the smooth muscles in the airways. By doing so, tiotropium helps relax these muscles, which in turn leads to bronchodilation (widening of the airways) and improved airflow.
